Antler Bear by Claudia Peina

Antler Bear by Claudia Peina

Carefully shaped by Zuni artisans, fetishes are a physical embodiment of a living spirit. Traditionally, native peoples of the Southwest created carvings to represent the totem animals of the Six Cardinal Directions (the pivotal points of nature). Today, fetishes are fashioned after a diverse selection of animals and spirits; each with their own meanings, strengths, and weaknesses. These sculptures are made from a variety of materials, mostly stone and mineral, but organic mediums are also used, such as tagua nut and antler.

3 x 1 1/4 x 1

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.

Daughter of Ernest Peina and Tina Sice, sister of Colvin Peina(d), Ray and Troy Sice. Claudia has been carving since the age of 17 and was inspired by her aunt and uncle. Her favorite is antler, elk horn, turquoise and marble. Claudia is known for her dancing bears and maidens.
